Fine lines and wrinkles
WHAT'S CAUSING THEM?
Ultraviolet
rays get the brunt of the blame. Just a
few minutes of sun each day will weaken
the collagen and elastin bonds that give
skin its strength and elasticity. Some
creases are (sadly) inevitable:
Hormones, genetics, gravity, and
repetitive motions such as smiling all
affect your skin.
WHAT YOU CAN DO NOW
Each
morning, apply a moisturizer with broad
spectrum protection (minimum SPF15).
Before bed, apply a prescription retinoid
cream, such as Retin-A or Renova; it's
proven to enhance collagen production

and speed cell turnover. “No other
topical anti-wrinkle treatment has as
much data showing it works,” says Dr.
Ranella Hirsch, president of the
American Society of Cosmetic
Dermatology and Aesthetic Surgery. If
your skin is too sensitive for prescription
vitamin A, substitute a gentler over-the-
counter retinol, though its effects won’t
be as pronounced.

HOW YOUR DOCTOR CAN HELP
Dermatologists have several wrinkle
treatments in their arsenal, such as mild
peels and microdermabrasion to slough
off superficial layers of skin. Injectable
fillers can smooth creases by plumping
them up; Botox injections flatten them
with a wrinkle-paralyzing toxin. “More
high-tech laser treatments reach deep
into the layers of the dermis and
stimulate skin to repair itself.
These treatments can be dramatic
after a few sessions,” says Dr.
Arielle Kauvar, a clinical
associate professor of
dermatology at New York
University School
of Medicine.
MAKEUP TRICKS
“Don’t try to
hide fine lines under a lot of
makeup,” says makeup artist
Sonia Kashuk. Start with a
primer followed by a sheer
layer of foundation. Line your
upper lashes to draw attention
up.
